2025 Weavers, Felters & Spinners Tour

July 21, 2025 - July 25, 2025 12:00 pm

*** NO SOLO TRAVELLER SUPPLEMENT ***  Calling all felters, spinners, knitters & weavers – we’re leading a fully escorted tour to the Chatham Islands – departing Auckland  Monday 21 July, returning to Auckland Friday 25 July.

We’ll be visiting local sheep farmers, enjoy chatting with them and hearing about the life as a Chatham Island farmer and enjoy meeting local Chatham Island crafters over an evening “wine, cheese & chat”.

The breeds of sheep, of course will depend on what the farmers have although many of the Chatham Island sheep farms stock Romneys.  Romney fleece is a classic wool fibre.  It’s extremely versatile and one of the finest fibre of all the long wool breeds (29 – 37 microns).  Their fleece is long 4-8 inches (10-20cm), lustrous, well-defined with a uniform crimp.

The Romeny’s wool can come in a variety of natural colours (white, black, gray, silver and brown).  You’ll come away with a generous amount of raw wool which you can hand pick from the bales – wool in a variety of colours

There are many Pitt Island sheep which originate from Saxony Merinos and this wool will also be available.

Bring your hand carding brushes, spindles and felting needles as we’re being hosted by a few of the locals – enjoy their hospitality as you sit around chatting and working your wool.

  • Walk the beach at Waitangi West where small pink paua shells lay abundantly on the foreshore
  • Step onto the Basalt columns and view the giant kelp wafting in the swells
  • A personally escorted coastal walk at Port Hutt where you’ll enjoy a unique and special paua experience
  • Farm inspired long lunch prepared by a private chef at Kopi Bush Retreat – your hosts are Bridget & John Preece the owners of this home which has been featured on New Zealand’s television series Grand Designs
  • Wine, cheese & chat afternoon with local fellow crafters
  • Hapupu to view the Moriori rakau momori (tree carvings or dendroglyphs) and the kopi groves that were planted by Moriori
  • Ocean Mail Reserve where you can see the reef where in the 1800’s a ship grounded itself on the reef
  • Blind Jims where you have the opportunity to wade the lagoon’s shallow waters looking for fossilised sharks teeth and kina spines.

2024 Weavers, Felters & Spinners Tour

July 22, 2024 - July 26, 2024 12:00 pm

SOLD OUT – WAITLIST ONLY

*** NO SOLO TRAVELLER SUPPLEMENT ***  Calling all felters, spinners & weavers – we’re leading a fully escorted tour to the Chatham Islands – departing Auckland  Monday 22 July, returning to Auckland 26 July.

We’ll be visiting local sheep farmers, enjoy chatting with them and hearing about the life as a Chatham Island farmer.

There are many Pitt Island sheep which originate from Saxony Merinos and some of the wool will likely be from this breed

Bring your hand carding brushes, spindles and felting needles as we’re being hosted by a few of the locals – enjoy their hospitality as you sit around chatting and working your wool.

  • There will be visits to locations to gather inspiration:
  • Walk the beach at Waitangi West where small pink paua shells lay abundantly on the foreshore
  • Step onto the Basalt columns and view the giant kelp wafting in the swells
  • A personally escorted coastal walk at Port Hutt where you’ll enjoy a unique and special paua experience
  • A special treat is a lunch at Kopi Bush Retreat – your hosts are Bridget & John Preece the owners of this home which has been featured on New Zealand’s television series Grand Designs
  • Hapupu to view the Moriori rakau momori (tree carvings or dendroglyphs) and the kopi groves that were planted by Moriori
  • Ocean Mail where you can see the reef where in the 1800’s a ship was shipwrecked
  • Wetlands & Aster walks
  • Blind Jims where you have the opportunity to wade the lagoon’s shallow waters looking for fossilised sharks teeth and kina spines.
